Over the past few months, a lot of people have been on the lookout for a new job. While some people began their search well before the pandemic hit the headlines, others will have been made redundant, or put on furlough, because of Covid-19.
If you’re one of the many people currently looking for the next step on their career ladder, the new national lockdown may have come as a bit of a blow. But fear not, with a little organisation, and a bit of persistence, you can apply for – and secure – your dream job. Keep reading to find out more.
Who’s hiring?
During the first national lockdown back in the spring, a lot of companies were unable to maintain their customer base. As a result, a large number of employers put their staff on furlough and more or less went into hibernation.
While some businesses are still struggling this time around – bars, restaurants and others in the hospitality industry in particular – a lot of companies have now found ways to work around lockdown. A lot of employers have rolled out remote working over the past few months. In many cases, this has actually enabled them to expand and hire extra staff. As a result, the jobs market this time round looks a lot rosier. There are more positions to apply for and employers seem more motivated to complete the hiring process and get new talent on board.
Applying under lockdown
In most cases, the job application process will be the same now as it is in more ‘normal’ times. You’ll probably apply remotely via an online application or you’ll send your CV direct to a prospective employer.
The main difference in the job application process under lockdown will be the interview. A lot of employers are carrying out interviews over the internet in order to minimise face-to-face contact. Online interviews can be challenging for many. Although some people may find them less formal, video calls can also be a little awkward, especially if you have technical difficulties.
The best way to ensure your online interview goes without a hitch is to thoroughly test your equipment. Find out which platform you’ll be expected to use a few days before the interview and get familiar with it. This should give you time to iron out any issues before the big day. If you’re invited for a face-to-face interview, make sure you follow all Covid-19 safety precautions that are in place. Showing consideration for others, and respect for the rules of the office, will help to start your interview off on the right foot.
Can you apply for a job when you’re on furlough?
If you’ve been put on furlough you can’t work at your existing employer, but you can work elsewhere if your current contract allows it. There are no restrictions to applying for a job while on furlough, so you’re free to look around for a role that suits you better.
