The growing popularity of Skype and other web-based telephony systems provides a useful addition to the recruitment process. “When geographical challenges present in the recruitment process, it may be appropriate to use a Skype interview as part of the selection screening to draw up a shortlist of candidates to meet in person,” explains accountancy recruitment specialist Tina Maguire of Norwich-based Big Sky Additions.
Scientists disagree on the exact value of non verbal messages in communication, but they all agree that the impact of body language is significantly higher than words and tone: “Though a Skype interview takes place remotely, the candidate’s body language can still be closely scrutinised via webcam so its important to be aware of how your posture and hand gestures make an impression on the interviewer or panel,” continues Tina, who recruits for all types of temporary and permanent accountancy jobs in Norfolk.
Most of us who use Skype do so to keep in touch with friends and relatives on a casual and informal basis. Skype for interviews will be more formal and candidates should make sure the background and their dress code are appropriate.
Participating in a Skype interview can be just as stressful as the face to face experience, not least because of the risk of a technology meltdown. “Try and time the interview when your broadband speed is reasonably fast or video may struggle and you could end up with an awkward delay between questions,” suggests Tina.
A practice run with a reliable friend can confirm that you’ve mastered the art of talking directly to the camera and ironed out any technology challenges before the real thing. “Finally, don’t forget the basics like getting everyone’s names so you can answer them in person and be sure you’ve done your interview preparation to maximise your chances of success,” concludes Tina.
