Unusual Interview Questions
Preparing for an upcoming job interview usually means running through a few classic ed questions with a helpful friend or adviser. “We always ensure our candidates are well-prepared for the interview process by talking them through a range of scenarios,<” explains Norwich-based accountancy recruitment specialist, Tina Maguire of Big Sky Additions.
A survey of 500 employers published last year revealed that more than half of the companies had used Unusual Interview Questions or curveball questions to try and uncover hidden skills, with companies like Apple and Google achieving notoriety for asking some pretty obscure stuff. “Employers love unusual questions because they test creativity, logical thinking and the ability to think on your feet,” explains Tina, who recruits temporary and permanent accountancy staff in Norfolk. Tina advises candidates to keep their cool: “Don’t be thrown by an abstract question – remember there is no right answer but employers are trying to understand how your thought processes work and how well you can articulate yourself.”
As well as the more conventional line of questioning, here are some of Tina’s more unusual discoveries to help you to expect the unexpected when it comes to unusual interview questions:
- If you were a Microsoft Office programme which one would you be?
- If you had a dinner party and could invite six guests (alive or dead), who would they be?
- If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you bring with you?
- If a movie was made about your life, who would play you and why?
- Have you ever been on a boat?
- If you could be a superhero, what would your super powers be?
