So what’s really in a name and how important is it to you? Could you be missing out by skipping for grand titles?

When searching for a new job, the job title is often the first thing we learn about a prospective role. Some people put huge value on these few words which are used to summarise the role: “Job titles are a key part of the job hunting process, and we all attach a certain amount of our identity and self-worth to this simple description – don’t forget our ancestors were so attached to their job title that it could form part of their surname (think Mr Baker),” advises accountancy recruitment specialist, Sam Holt from Big Sky Additions.

When searching for your ideal role, it can be easy to read too much into the two or three words that advertise the vacancy: “Its important to consider the bigger picture rather than simply accepting a job because you think the job title has added significance or will enhance your CV – at the end of the day it’s the content of the role that really matters,’ continues Sam.

Some employers are using unusual job titles to attract younger workers or make their job vacancies stand out in a competitive recruitment marketplace. “Tweaking the job title can reflect the branding of the company and inject a bit of humour which could be indicative of a more relaxed workplace culture,” suggests Sam.
